On July 15, officials announced that the 49th Annual National Shrimp Festival has been canceled for 2020 due to concerns around the spread of Coronavirus. The annual festival was expected to take place October 8-11. The Coastal Alabama Business Chamber hosts this free event annually, bringing together music, food, entertainment, and more to the Gulf Shores.

“Our goal is to begin preparing now for the 2021 National Shrimp Festival and work toward making it the best yet here in Gulf Shores. We are also working with the Wharf and the City of Orange Beach to bring a new and exciting event there in 2021," said Greg Alexander, President & CEO of the Coastal Alabama Business Chamber in a release. "We thank everyone for your understanding during these unprecedented times and we look forward to the possibility of coming back bigger and stronger next year."

The 27th Annual Shrimp Festival Golf Challenge for Education is still scheduled to take place this year on September 11, 2020. This event takes place at the Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club.
